With the state of California in the midst of a drought and potable water shortage, a city in the West Los Angeles Region (City) decided to be proactive in reducing its water usage.

That’s exactly what the City did when it commenced its Water Efficient Fixture Project as part of its Water Conservation Plan. The Project specified the installation of a total of 231 Sloan products, including Sloan’s UPPERCUT® dual-flush flushometers as well as its waterfree urinals at 24 City properties.

Known for their water-saving features, Sloan’s products lived up to their reputation. Sloan fixtures achieved an average 35 percent water use reduction over the course of a three-month study of six of the City’s largest locations, more than doubling the State’s 16 percent water use reduction mandate.

Getting a Handle on the Drought

A total of 206 flushometers were replaced with Sloan’s UPPERCUT dual-flush flushometers. Known for their green handles and proven water-reduction capabilities, Sloan’s UPPERCUT fixtures replaced the City’s 3.5 gpf water closets with new 1.6/1.1 gpf dual-flush diaphragms, which use 1.6 gpf for solid waste and only 1.1 gpf for liquid waste. The retrofit enabled the community to use the right amount of water for the right type of flush, significantly reducing water waste.

While California’s water shortage crisis imposes strict regulations on water usage, one of its penal facilities is now a model for institutional water conservation thanks to Sloan Programmed Water Technologies (PWT).

The PWT® system at Claybank Adult Detention Center allows the prison to control and monitor water usage and access in every individual cell and shower room from one master control center.

With the cost of water and sewage skyrocketing, water conservation is a huge issue in prisons, where inmates can act out by abusing their toilet and shower privileges (flood their cells, flush large items to clog the system, etc.). Not only does the system create a more controlled environment to curb unwanted behavior; it helps to drastically reduce the prison’s water and sewer bills, as well as its maintenance costs.

Electronically operated Sloan Flushometers, designed as part of a one-piece toilet and sink combination, limit toilet flushes per hour and block inmates if they try to flush again.

The PWT® Shower Systems control the entire shower operation in high abuse applications, limiting usage and saving the prison thousands of gallons of water per day.

Plumbing chases that house the main PWT system are housed behind the walls, away from inmate access and abuse.

The customer service that we’ve received [from Sloan] has been extraordinary. When we need something, they take care of it. The PWT system is really easy to use and trouble shoot. We can monitor water usage in each cell quickly from one central location.
